Challenging and Engaging Gifted Students in Classrooms and Schools
ASCD Empower17 Conference
1:00 to 2:00 PM on March 27, 2017
Location: Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim, CA
Event Information: http://empower.ascd.org/Default.aspx
Description: In this interactive session, teachers and educator leaders learn instructional strategies shared in the presenter’s ASCD Arias book. The presenter, who teaches the PostDoc Masterclass at University of Cambridge, implemented these strategies for teaching gifted students while she was an award-winning teacher, and supported teachers when she was a school administrator, district administrator, and chief education & research officer. Since the majority of her students were socioeconomically-disadvantaged English learners, she specialized in using data, differentiation, and creative instruction (like gamification, project-based learning, global learning, makerspaces, etc.) to ensure her gifted students were being challenged and engaged even as they learned alongside struggling learners. The presenter (a Mensan who grew up GATE) is the assistant coordinator of the Mensa Gifted Youth Program in her county and will share exciting enrichment opportunities with attendees. Educators will leave the session with a reference tool, knowing how to identify each gifted student’s special needs (including overexcitabilities and hidden challenges), and knowing how to engage and challenge gifted students in specific ways that work seamlessly beside other students’ lower-level learning.
