Data Visualization: Learn It Like Your Life Depends on It
Mensa Annual Gathering (U.S.)
1:30 P.M. to 2:45 P.M., July 3, 2016
Location: Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, CA
Event Information: http://ag.us.mensa.org/pages/programming/sessions
Description: Even before Florence Nightingale diagrammed soldiers' changing mortality rates to save lives, we have seen clever design used to convey statistics and other complex concepts. As our communication of high-stakes data becomes increasingly visual, we need to ensure this communication is effective. This session will share best practices for data visualization that are based on the presenter’s quantitative research but presented in an engaging, user-friendly manner. These best practices (which involve Over-the-Counter Data Standards) have been shown to double, triple or quadruple (depending on the practice applied) viewers’ likelihood of understanding the data being displayed. Attendees will learn how to access free tools to create data displays and free resources for improving the manner in which they communicate data. Fascinating examples throughout history will illustrate the importance of making data “over-the-counter” so it is easy to use.
