Award-winning educator Dr. Jenny Grant Rankin, who teaches the PostDoc Masterclass at University of Cambridge (as lecturer), has a Ph.D. in Education featuring a specialization in School Improvement Leadership. She is an active member of Mensa (volunteering as assistant coordinator of Orange County Mensa’s Gifted Youth Program) and many educational organizations, particularly within the areas of data, assessment, and technology. Dr. Rankin began her career in higher education, where she oversaw a university’s Visual Arts and Information Technology Departments. She left that role for her rewarding career in K-12 public education. After many years as a junior high school English teacher and teacher on special assignment (TOSA), she became a junior high school assistant principal. She later served as a district administrator overseeing assessment and data use for a 35,000-student school district. Dr. Rankin eventually became Chief Education & Research Officer (CERO) for Illuminate Education, an educational technology data systems company, where she was able to impact data use at hundreds of school districts across the U.S.
Dr. Rankin’s books relate to education, particularly education data, educational technology, teacher burnout, and giftedness. Winning Teacher of the Year was a favorite honor, as was having the U.S. flag flown over the United States Capitol at the request of the Honorable Christopher Cox, U.S. Representative, in recognition of Dr. Rankin’s dedication to her students. Her recent awards include the #EduWin Award, EdTech’s 2014 Must-Read Higher Education Technology Blogs List, finalist for EdTech Digest’s Trendsetter Award, SIGNL Award for Twitter Followers Momentum, and Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE) Academic Expert. Dr. Rankin has served as judge for the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education’s prestigious Milken-Penn Graduate School of Education Business Plan Competition and the California Student Media Festival (CSMF) sponsored by PBS SoCAL, Computer Using Educators (CUE), and Discovery Education. Dr. Rankin was also paid to examine alignment issues related to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) summative assessments as part of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) Alignment Study, and she also served on the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) Panel for Achievement Level Setting.
Dr. Rankin contributes to ongoing studies (such as for Yale University) and has served on research committees for the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), the Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education (SITE), and the California Council on Teacher Education (CCTE). She also served on the Panel of Experts and the Advisory Board for the New Media Consortium (NMC) Horizon Report: 2015 K12 Edition, honored with a special listing and acknowledgment in the report. Dr. Rankin also served as reviewer for the Handbook of Research on Innovations in Information Retrieval, Analysis, and Management from IGI Global and is an expert reviewer (reviewing for the journal Educational Researcher and on award panels) for the American Educational Research Association (AERA).
